What is UCAS Extra?
You can make up to five choices on your UCAS application. If you made five choices and have decisions back on them all, you can use use UCAS Extra if you:
- Weren't accepted, or
- Declined the offers you received.
UCAS Extra lets you add another choice at no extra cost to help you gain a university place before the Clearing process starts.
UCAS Extra doesn't cost you anything. You only become eligible if you used all five choices in your UCAS application but hold no offers. If you didn't use all five choices, you can sign into your original application to add further courses there rather than using UCAS Extra.
Once you add a new choice through Extra, you cannot revert to your original five choices. You can only add one course at a time.
UCAS will send you all the details you need to apply if you become eligible.
When is UCAS Extra?
UCAS Extra will open on 26 February 2025 and close on 4 July.

How do I apply via UCAS Extra?
Make your application via the UCAS website:
- Find a course you want to apply for – you can check to see if it has any places available.
- Contact the university to see if they'll consider you, and ask any questions you may have.
- Apply for the new course by adding the details to your application.
- Wait to hear back from the university.
UCAS Extra doesn’t allow applicants to submit a new online personal statement or reference. If you are applying for a different subject, you should send an updated, relevant statement to the university. Do this after you submit this new course as your Extra choice.
It’s a good idea to let the university know a revised statement is on its way. Include your UCAS application number on your new statement so unis can match it to the correct application. If you wish, you can ask your referee to update their reference too.
UCAS Extra offers
If a university makes you an offer, either unconditional or conditional, you can firmly accept or decline it just like any other offer. There will be a date given that you must reply to the offer by, so be sure you note what this is.
If you accept it, you become Unconditional Firm (UF) or Conditional Firm (CF) for that university. There's only one choice at any time in UCAS Extra, so an insurance choice is not an option. You’re committed to your choices in exactly the same way as the main UCAS scheme.
If you don't get an offer after 21 days, or decide to decline your offer, you can opt to make another UCAS Extra choice.
