You’ve been rejected from all your UCAS choices
UCAS Extra gives you another chance to apply for a course if you made five UCAS choices but don't hold any offers after you get decisions back for them all. This could be because you didn't receive any offers, or because you turned offers down.
You’ll receive all the details you need to apply through UCAS Extra once UCAS has registered these rejections. UCAS Extra opens 26 February 2025.
Your plans have changed
You may have decided on another career path since you applied, or that the subjects you’ve chosen aren't the right fit. You may think the unis you’ve applied for are a little too far from home and that it’s no longer practical to study there.
Don’t worry, there’s no need to scrap your application and apply the following year. All you need to do is decline all the offers/applications you’ve made and try again via UCAS Extra.
You’ve received four rejections for medical school
Only a small number of students use UCAS Extra each year. The most common reason for doing so is having received four rejections for medical school and needing to make a fifth choice.
- If you haven't used all your choices on the original application, you can add another course after the January deadline.
- If you have used all five choices and heard back from all unis, then you can use UCAS Extra.
There are several options for what you can do if you miss out on a place to study Medicine. You might choose a science subject that will help you towards a graduate Medicine degree in due course. There are also many healthcare subjects that you can study as an undergraduate degree. We look at all alternatives in our guide to this subject.
You don’t want to wait for Clearing
Remember, you can only use UCAS Extra if you have heard back from all the unis you applied to and either:
- Don't have any offers.
- Turned down all offers you did receive.
Think and seek advice before declining your remaining offers – highly popular courses are less likely to be available through Clearing. Once Clearing opens, our Clearing course search will list whether a course is available.
