Gender studies explores social and cultural construction of gender and its impact on individuals and society. A degree will bring together different theories and methods from fields like sociology, anthropology, psychology, literature, history and cultural studies, to explore gender equality and oppression. This subject also looks at more inclusive ways of living and organising society.   

Undergraduate Gender Studies degrees on offer in the UK include:

Entry requirements for a Gender Studies degree at a university generally range from 104 –120 UCAS points. This could include:   

  • A Levels: BBB - BCC 

  • BTECs: DMM - MMM 

  • Scottish Highers:  BBBCC - CCCCC (Advanced Highers: CCC) 

  • International Baccalaureate: 39 – 37 

Good to have  

  • Studied humanities such as history, sociology or politics at A Level (or equivalent) 

  • Work experience or volunteering that helps you understand issues faced by different groups, e.g., youth and community work, work in health or social care, or with a charity 

  • Independent research into the subject, or areas of research at your chosen uni such as TED talks, podcasts, or insights from the websites of professional bodies

  • Introduction to gender studies  

  • Feminist theory  

  • Gender, race and ethnicity  

  • LGBTQ+ studies  

  • Gender and media  

  • Gender and health  

  • Gender and globalisation  

  • Gender and politics

Some universities offer students specific scholarships, bursaries, or grants so it’s worth checking if you are eligible, how to apply and what it covers such as materials, tuition fees and/or living costs.

With so many different careers to go into, starting salaries may vary considerably. For example, you might decide to go into social work, with a graduate starting salary of approx. £24,000 - £30,000 or become a human resources officer starting on between £24,000 - £35,000. Alternatively, you could become a gender equality officer on a wage of £18,000 - £28,000 depending on your employer and location.  

There are a wide range of careers you could go into involving things like critical analysis, social justice and inclusion and diversity. Some examples include:  

  • Gender equality officer  

  • Diversity and inclusion officer  

  • Human rights advocate  

  • Policy advisor/researcher  

  • Social worker  

  • Human resources officer  

  • Youth worker  

  • Communication specialists  

  • Public health officer
