Digital marketing involves any type of promotional activity delivered on an electronic device. Often referred to as online marketing, a digital marketing campaign might involve an online video, paid ad, social media post or email and will try to connect potential customers with a brand or idea.  

Digital marketing has become increasingly important and is seen as a growing area as more people spend time online. It also has minimal upfront costs as opposed to more traditional marketing such as magazine ads, television or advertising board.  

Several options include an industry placement year in the UK or abroad as part of the course.

Typically, entry to an undergraduate Digital Marketing degree requires between 96–168 UCAS points although courses with a foundation year will be less. Qualifications may include:  

  • A Levels: AAA–CCD 

  • BTECs: DDD–MMP 

  • Scottish Highers: AAAAB–BBBC (Advanced Highers: AAA) 

  • International Baccalaureate: 37–28 

Good to have

  • Work experience or shadowed someone in a digital marketing company 

  • Volunteered with a charity to support their digital communications  

  • Developed an online presence that shows your skills and understanding of techniques  

  • Done your own research into digital marketing following relevant podcasts, TED talks, resources on websites like the Digital Marketing Institute (DMI).

Some universities offer Digital Marketing students specific scholarships, bursaries, or grants so it’s worth checking if you are eligible, how to apply and what it covers like materials, tuition fees and/or living costs.

Entry level digital marketing salaries for an assistant role tend to range from approx. £22,000 to £25,000 and with experience could rise to up to £28,000.  
 
More senior management roles can see salaries up to approx. £48,000 depending on geographical location and size of the company you work for.  
Some companies also offer performance related bonuses and other benefits such as private healthcare.
