How Uniselect can help you through Clearing

Find out how using Uniselect as part of your Clearing research can help you find the right university for you.

Clearing is the process where universities offer the available spaces they have on courses after the main application cycle has finished. In 2025 Clearing runs from 5 July to 20 October. You may want to go through Clearing if you did not get your expected grades, didn't receive any offers from your chosen universities or if you've changed your mind about what you want to study.

You may change your mind about where or what you want to study at university. Clearing gives you a good opportunity to find a course that matches what you want to study after your exams. You may not have met your expected grades but still feel ready to go on to university. If you've changed your mind about moving away from home you can find a Clearing course closer to home that will suit you.

What is Uniselect?

Uniselect is our university matching tool that uses independent and trusted data to find exactly what you are looking for from your university experience and produces a shortlist of universities that match exactly what you want.

By answering some questions about what you鈥檇 like to study and what you鈥檇 like from a university and its location, you are given a personalised shortlist of unis that are best suited to you. You can then save as many of these shortlists to your profile as you like so that you can go back to them later to do some more in-depth research to narrow down your shortlist and make your final decision.

Can Uniselect help me find a place through Clearing?

While Clearing is open universities in your shortlist will say IN CLEARING to let you know that they have courses available to you. You can then have a look at that university鈥檚 Clearing page and see if they have a course that would be of interest to you. You can save these shortlists and go back to research Clearing courses.

Why the universities at the top of the table may not be best suited to you

  • Universities at the top of the table may not offer the exact subject area or course that you want to do. Not all universities will offer every course, so it's important to do your research and make sure that the university you're interested in has exactly what you want to study.
  • Highly ranked unis may be too expensive. Some of the universities that come top of our tables will have high tuition costs, which could be a barrier. There could be a university in the middle of the table that may be better suited to you and may not be as expensive for you to attend.
  • Not all of the top twenty unis will be a good fit for your learning style. Some top universities have a very competitive and demanding academic environment, which may not be a good fit for everyone. If you're looking for a more relaxed and supportive learning environment, there could be a better option for you within your Uniselect shortlist.
  • Some highly rated universities may not be in a place you'd like to live. Top universities are often located in big cities, which can be a great experience for some students. However, if you're looking for a smaller town or rural setting, there are many other great unis that offer a great education in a more relaxed environment. You can select the type of location that you鈥檇 like to live in as part of the Uniselect questions.

Ultimately, the best university for you is the one that best meets your individual needs and goals. Don't be afraid to consider unis that aren't at the top of the table or a part of the Russell group. There are many great UK universities that offer a high-quality education.

Here are the main factors to consider when choosing a university:

  • Your personal interests and goals. What do you want to study? What do you want to do after you graduate?
  • Your learning style. Are you a self-starter or do you prefer more structure? Do you learn best in a small class or a large lecture hall?
  • The university鈥檚 location. Do you want to live in a big city or a small town? Do you want to be close to home or far away?
  • The school's culture. What is the school's atmosphere like? Is it competitive or collaborative? Do they have good social clubs and societies?

It's important to weigh all these factors when choosing a university. There is no one-size-fits-all answer, and the best university for you will depend on your individual needs and goals. This is where Uniselect can help you by personalising your search.
