1. What is your name?
Tia West
2. What degree had you originally applied for and where?
I had applied and received offers from Brunel University London to study Product Design Engineering, and Plymouth University to study Digital Design and Engineering.
3. What is your degree, and where are you studying?
BSc (Hons) Design Engineering, Bournemouth University (BU)
4. Why did you enter Clearing?
I entered Clearing because I wanted to find a course that I was certain to be the right fit for me. I found that my A-level studies took up most of my attention while I was applying for university and while I applied for courses that would take me down the correct career path and that I was sure I would enjoy, I was still in the process of making decisions for myself so I found that it became a lot to handle quite quickly. When I finally got a clear idea of what I wanted to do next, I had already accepted my offers so I knew straight away that Clearing would likely be my best chance to ensure my next step in my education was 100% the right one. And in the end, while I was nervous, I had to do what was right for me. Come results day I rejected the offers I had and released myself into Clearing to then accept my offer from Bournemouth University!
5. What factors made you finally settle on the course you chose?
I settled on BSc (Hons) Design Engineering at BU for a few reasons, firstly Bournemouth was in a good location for me, far away from home but not too far that it was hard to travel back if I needed to, and close to the beach! I had also spent a long time looking through the course content and the facilities at BU, so I knew what the facilities were like, and I knew I would enjoy the course, which was the main point in my decision making. I鈥檓 glad to say I definitely made the right choice.
6. Did you attend a Clearing open day and, if so, how was it?
No, I did not attend a Clearing open day. I don't live particularly close to Bournemouth and with work as well it just wasn't possible however, when I did get to university during the first week the Student Ambassadors were almost always on campus helping people figure out where to go and so I found my way around quite easily. I was also taken around campus and shown the facilities I would have access to during my first week of lectures, so even though I never went to an open day, I didn't feel I had missed out.

7. Did you find a place to live easily?
Yes! It was very easy for me to find a place to live once I had accepted my Clearing offer. I was given the details on how to secure my accommodation via email and by the staff on the Clearing phone line, so I knew what to do. There were still plenty of accommodation options when I went onto the Accommodation portal to pick my room, including different buildings, options for an all-female flat, larger rooms, and larger beds. I ended up in a standard room by the Lansdowne Campus, 15 minutes away from town, right next to the bus stop to get to uni, and a minute away from The Old Fire Station, a student club in Bournemouth.
8. Have you enjoyed your course and time at uni
I have absolutely enjoyed my course and my time at university so far! I was not sure what to expect as I had not seen Bournemouth University before and I had only seen the town once or twice before, but I adapted to uni life really quickly. Especially because I have really been enjoying my course so far! I study Design Engineering and so far, I have been learning CAD, coding, electronics, engineering principles, and spending time in the workshop, which I love. I tried to get involved as much as I could, and I have met so many amazing people since I've been here which has made my first year so much better than I thought it could be and I'm excited to continue into my second year!
