Course summary

Course summary

If you love sport and want to help others get the most out of their abilities and talents, then this course, which combines formal learning with practical application, is ideal for you. You’ll learn the skills needed to become an inspiring, motivating coach as well as how to design a training programme and analyse performance. You could end up mentoring top athletes or inspiring schoolchildren – we’ll help you to follow the coaching path that excites you most.

The coaches we help develop have a fine reputation, especially because they have already gained proper experience before they graduate.

So, after your three years with us, you’ll be well placed to find employment, with the latest statistics showing that 90 per cent of our graduates are either in work or involved in further study within six months of graduating. Much of that is down to UEL’s growing reputation as a hotbed of sporting excellence.

What you'll learn

We’re flexible with our sports courses at the University of East London. So, in your first year, you’ll be studying the same subjects as your contemporaries on the Sport, PE and Development, and Sport and Exercise Science courses. This gives you the opportunity to switch courses at the end of the year should you wish.

Career

“Our coaching course is about helping students identify and follow their own ambitions in whatever area they wish,†says Course Leader Andy Preston.

“Through our work placements, we’ll help you develop your own skills and push your career to wherever you want to take it.â€

We think your knowledge of all areas of coaching will be so thorough by the time you finish our course that you’ll be in a strong position to land a job in the field you’re targeting. Our record suggests this is no idle boast.

We've helped develop coaches in vastly differing areas. At the elite level, for instance, one of our students, Andre Fernandez, has just gone on to be employed by England Athletics, helping guide some of Britain’s best long jumpers and sprinters while working alongside internationally recognised coach Clarence Callender. Andre’s also not a bad long jumper himself!

We’re just as proud of our graduates who have gone on to jobs in the community, helping coach sports such as basketball and football at club and schools level. They include graduates like Abul Hussain, who’s now a community sports coach working for activeNewham.

Others have found work in the community operations of professional football clubs, including Millwall, West Ham and Leyton Orient.
