Course summary
Portsmouth is the only University in the UK with the flexibility to choose when to do an optional paid placement or self-employed year. Either take a placement in your third year, or finish your studies first and complete a placement in your fourth year. You can decide if and when to take a placement after you've started your course.
OverviewBe a leading figure in the next generation of innovative construction projects.Designed and delivered by a team of experienced professionals, this BSc (Hons) Quantity Surveying degree will prepare you for a successful career calculating and managing costs relating to the built environment. You'll learn to think like an entrepreneur, develop professional business acumen and learn sought after quantity surveying skills. Become a financial and contractual expert in cost and value management, contract law and risk assessment. When you graduate, you'll be prepared to address the social, economic and technical aspects of construction projects of all sizes, anywhere in the world.

Careers and opportunitiesDue to the high costs and risks associated with construction projects, your skills as a quantity surveyor will always be in high demand.As a graduate apprentice starting your career, you could earn up to £28,000. And once you've gained more experience in industry, salaries can go up as high as £55,000, or £80,000 if you're aiming for a management role.

You could work in a paid role in a professional organisation (our students earn an average salary of £19,000 during their placements) or set up your own business, giving you the chance to grow your professional network and enhance your CV.
