Course summary

As an internationally renowned research department we have a vibrant community of research postgraduates. We offer full-time and part-time research degrees leading to MPhil and PhD qualifications in all areas of research covered by members of faculty. We provide a stimulating yet supportive atmosphere, combined with access to superb research facilities. Our research postgraduates work closely with leading researchers in their chosen field and their projects are often published in top international journals.

We regard a research degree as an apprenticeship, providing training in the knowledge and skills required to be an independent researcher. You will specialise in a relatively narrow subject area and conduct novel research to advance our knowledge of that area, meaning that by the end of your degree you are an expert in your topic. Whilst you will acquire in-depth knowledge and a specialised skill set through conducting exciting research projects alongside your supervisors, you will also receive broader training in research skills and psychological knowledge, that are widely applicable to both academic and non-academic settings.

MPhil degrees involve conducting research under the supervision of a member of staff and submitting the results in a thesis.

Prospects

When our research students graduate, most take up lectureships and postdoctoral research positions in leading institutions worldwide, whilst others choose to apply their skills and knowledge outside academia and successfully pursue careers in health or industry.
