Archaeology and Anthropology at the University of Central Lancashire provides a diverse and dynamic environment for postgraduate research students. We have a highly productive group of academic staff, all of whom are research active, working on ground-breaking projects. Our staff have a proven track-record as research degree supervisors: over the past ten years 22 students have successfully completed research degrees in these subjects. Our expertise covers humanities, social sciences and science, and field-based research.
Our state-of-the-art facilities include an archaeological science laboratory with areas for processing finds, a soil flotation unit, a dedicated bone lab for the analysis of skeletal remains, stable isotope preparation lab and a suite of cutting edge geophysical and excavation equipment. Plus, our teaching collection includes one of the largest anthropological collections of human remains in the country.
Why study with us
- Field research is at the core of everything we do. Recent research projects have taken students across the UK, to Greece, Türkiye and the USA.
- We research collaboratively with many professional archaeological organisations in the UK and abroad.
- The Centre for Field Archaeology and Forensic Taphonomy has a vibrant research student community, with many students working in the centre.
Future Careers
A research degree in Archaeology or Anthropology shows a wide range of high-level and transferable skills. Some graduates go on to research work and teaching within academia. Others work as professional archaeologists or use their skills in a range of related occupations.
Successful completion of a research degree provides evidence of a wide range of high-level research skills. This can lead to many different opportunities. Some graduates go on to do post-doctoral research work or teaching at UCLan or other universities. Other former students work with national heritage bodies such as Historic England or as practicing archaeologists with professional companies in the UK and the US. You will also develop transferable skills which will be applicable in many careers outside the subject area.
