Why choose this course?

This course is a 60-credit module which is open to registered pharmacists with at least two years post-registration experience in a clinical, patient-facing role.

Upon successful completion of the 40-credit module, you will be awarded the Practice Certificate in Independent Prescribing from the University of Wolverhampton. Your name will then be forwarded to the Registrar of the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC), and you will be eligible to apply for annotation on the GPhC Register as an Independent Prescriber. This entitles you, with the support of your employer (unless self-employed), to practice as a Supplementary or Independent Prescriber.

What happens on the course?

The Independent Prescribing course is accredited by the GPhC and is designed to meet the learning outcomes outlined by the ''Standards for the education and training of pharmacist independent prescribers''.

The course is run over a 6 months period, with mandatory attendance during the 6 study days. Currently these run as one online study days and five face-to-face study days at the University of Wolverhamptons Wolverhampton campus.

What happens on the course:

All content covered during the 6 months course will cover the 32 LOs outlined by the GPhC standards for Pharmacist Independent Prescribers. Some of the key aspects covered are:

  • Consultation skills
  • Physical examination skills
  • Legal policy, professional and ethical aspects
  • Evidence- based practice and clinical skills

Upon successful completion of this 20 credits module in addition to the Independent Prescribing Course, you will achieve a 60 credits post graduate certificate in Prescribing Studies.

The enhanced clinical skills course has been designed with the aid of advanced clinical practitioners to allow students to gain confidence in advanced clinical examinations as well how to carry out more advanced and complex consultations involving evidence based approaches and treatment plans.
