Course summary

Use your personal and communication skills to learn how to support people with mental health problems, helping them lead a normal life.

Qualify as a registered mental health nurse and develop the expertise to be able to support people with mental illnesses in their homes and specialist health services.

As part of this course, youll:

Spend time at university honing your specialist knowledge

Practise your skills in a supported healthcare environment during placements

Learn how to aid the recovery of people with mental health problems, while working alongside those in related health and social care professions, including adult nurses, social workers and dietitians

Occupational Health clearance and compliance with standard NHS immunisations requirements is mandatory and essential for placement attendance. Please click ''find out more'' in the fees and funding section further down this page for full details of any extra costs relating to your course.

Completion of this course provides eligibility to apply for registration with the NMC as a qualified nurse - mental health nursing.

Studying nursing with Leeds Beckett gives you access to a wide variety of placement opportunities within the NHS and the voluntary sector. We can offer these in many settings, including services in drug and alcohol, mother and baby, eating disorders and forensics.

Teaching & Learning

Independent study is a crucial part of learning at university and you will be required to undertake many hours of self-directed research and reading, and preparation and writing of assessments. Your course is delivered through a number of modules, which will help you to plan your time and establish a study routine. Outside of your lectures, workshops and tutorials, a range of support is available to assist with your independent study. Our subject-specific librarians will be on hand to direct you to the specialist learning and study-skill resources. Youll also be assigned an academic advisor to give you tailored feedback and support.

Career Prospects

On completion of your course, you will be a qualified mental health nurse able to apply for registration with the Nursing & Midwifery Council. During your studies, you will experience a simulated recruitment process. Your tutors will be on hand to take you through mock interviews and provide tailored feedback. To support your search for employment, we also hold an annual nursing recruitment fair attended by a wide range of organisations, including the armed forces and the Royal College of Nursing.
