Course summary
This flexible, part-time Masters offers a seamless progression from our Medical Education PgCert. It is designed for busy medical professionals who wish to build their skills as a clinical educator but need a flexible course that can work around their other commitments. You develop your competence as a clinical educator in both professional practice and educational settings, with a focus on contemporary practice.
To take this course, you must have a relevant qualification in the field and be working in the profession.
What will you study?
Studying our Medical Education MA course will equip you with specialist knowledge and skills in clinical education and its practice. To develop your core competencies as an educator, Clinical Education in Practice, will allow you to explore and develop strategies for teaching individuals and groups of learners across a range of settings. You will adopt an informed and innovative approach to becoming a medical, dental or healthcare educator by examining effective strategies for teaching, supporting learning and assessment. To enhance your clinical teaching practice, you will critically analyse features of real, simulated and virtual learning environments while promoting best practice and innovation in your work as an educator. Furthermore, you will examine contemporary educational perspectives in the field of higher and professional education in the fields of medicine, dentistry and wider health professions in our Educational Perspectives for the Workplace unit.
You will explore approaches to curriculum delivery, which will allow you to re-think your own approaches to teaching, learning and assessment. In Understanding Learning in the Workplace, you will continue to explore the socio-political factors that influence the design, delivery and assessment of education and training. In doing so, you will develop an ability to critique the reform of education and training and familiarise yourself with the conceptions of work-based learning. With a critical approach, Educational Policy and Leadership will encourage to analyse theories and policies that impact the educational landscape while also allowing you to recognise the complex environments where educational leadership is required.
At the same time, you will develop your personal skills to positively influence teaching and learning by combining a range of leadership tools to enhance the quality of your service. To add to the list of core skills on this course, you will be given an Introduction to Research Methods that will allow you to explore quantitative and qualitative research methods, critically consider key ethical issues in health-related research and develop your ability to synthesise and critique literature. In particular, you will be supported to construct a research proposal that feeds into the Research Project Dissertation where you will develop and conduct an individual research project into a topic of your own interest relevant to medical/dental education.
Careers
The course is aligned to appropriate professional standards and is suitable for educational and clinical supervisors. It builds your ability to take on more senior educational roles within your current place of employment by enabling you to adopt a critical stance to your own and others educational practice and to propose ways of enhancing student and trainee learning experiences.
