Course summary
This course will give you opportunity to combine your initiative, numeracy skills and detailed subject knowledge, leading to careers that really make a difference to the world we live in. Mechanical engineers have key and pivotal roles throughout all aspects of our lives – from the personal and local level right up to the global level and even into space. We are involved in the development of new products, new processes, new technologies, new techniques – as well as innovative application of the existing state of the art. If you think about any of the exciting advances youve seen in robotics, power generation and energy storage, space exploration and applications, medical diagnostics and treatment, disability support, future transport (automotive, aerospace, personal) and many more sectors, you can be sure mechanical engineers were part of the teams that delivered them. As well as taught sessions, youll have access excellent manufacturing research facilities, including robotics and 3D printing techniques. You will also apply your knowledge in individual and group project settings. Mechanical and manufacturing engineering share a common programme for the first two years, where you will learn the fundamentals of engineering science and design. In the third year you will specialise in mechanical engineering options. This is a four-year course and year two will be spent studying abroad.
