Course summary
Course overview
Mathematics lies at the heart of numerous advancements in technology, science, and engineering, enabling us to understand and drive innovations that shape the future-from artificial intelligence to climate science.
Mathematics with Integrated Masters at Keele offers a broad coverage of the key disciplines pure mathematics, applied mathematics, and statistics. Pure mathematics focuses on mathematical proof, logical argument and abstraction, applied mathematics is concerned with methods and their application to modelling real-world problems, and statistics involves mathematical modelling of uncertainty and the analysis of data.
Course structure
During your first year, you will build a strong foundation in mathematical thinking, exploring sets, functions and proofs, calculus, mathematical methods, algebra and differential equations. To deepen your learning, you will apply your knowledge to analyse real data sets, using the statistical software R. You will also start to develop key employability skills by working in teams on group projects, solving problems and communicating your findings in visual ways.
Throughout the programme youll apply your knowledge to real-world theories or experiences, providing context to your learning and strengthening your understanding. Youll also have the chance to align your studies to your passions by choosing from a variety of optional modules.
In year two, you will strengthen your knowledge in pure and applied mathematics, probability and statistics, whilst expanding your skillset by learning the programming language Python.
Focusing on your employability skills, you will have the opportunity to spend time in industry with both full time and modular placement opportunities or spend time studying abroad. You will also build on your professional and transferable skills with extended problem work, report writing, effective communication of mathematical results, and collaboration with others.
Year three allows you to unleash your creativity and undertake a substantial piece of research, applying theoretical knowledge and problem-solving skills to a technical, software, research or business problem. Your research project is an excellent opportunity for you to draw together skills in experimental study design, critical interpretation of data, presentation and project management.
You will also have the widest choice in personalising your studies with exciting optional modules including Financial Mathematics, Waves, Medical Statistics and Cryptography.
In your final year of study, you will develop advanced research skills by undertaking an extensive masters level research project. Throughout this time, you will work in depth on a problem over an extended period, writing reports - journal style, whilst presenting and communicating your mathematical results to an academic audience by a poster and seminar talk.
