Course summary
Overview
The MBA is aimed specifically at current and aspiring managers who wish to develop their career in healthcare, social care and third sector organisations. It provides you with the opportunity to gain the knowledge and skills required to progress to senior management and leadership roles. With a strong practitioner focus, personal and career development is an underlying theme running through this course.
The MBA draws from your current and past experience, encouraging you to constantly apply theory to practice. It aims to enhance your capabilities to think critically, deal with ambiguity and seek solutions to complex problems. You can develop the core knowledge of concepts and business models, with a strong understanding of processes and practices, in order to develop your leadership, financial and project management skills within the healthcare management sector.
As part of this degree, you will have the opportunity to investigate the way management practice relates to wider societal and intercultural issues. You will consider the need for responsible, ethical and culturally sensitive practices in today’s global economy and the challenges it may present. The course will explore the wider external consequences of decisions and actions taken within the organisation, in order to develop your responsible management practice and help you with career progression.
Course information
Health and Social Care is a substantial and growing service sector, with new government investments giving it a higher profile than ever. Rapid changes within the industry mean that there is likely to be demand for well-trained and multi-skilled individuals.
The aim of this course is to equip you with the personal and professional skills to enable you to think creatively about the delivery of existing health care services and to respond to future demands. You will address the unique challenges and complexities facing managers and leaders in health and social care organisations.
This pathway includes two healthcare management specialist modules and your project will also be in this field. There will be no reference to healthcare management on your degree certificate, however your transcript will show all the modules you have studied and the grades you received.
The course consists of three distinct but interconnected stages:
The Certificate phase will develop a resource-based view of the business enterprise and examine how value is created, including the impact of the wider business environment on the enterprise’s value creation activities.
In the Diploma stage the focus shifts to considering the manager’s role in the development of an enterprise in response to the internal and external context, to create sustainable value.
The Masters phase of the programme will focus more specifically on the healthcare sector and /or healthcare management roles. The emphasis will be on exploring, critically evaluating and applying a range of sector specific models and concepts within a healthcare setting.
The course will also support you in clarifying and developing your career goals and will encourage reflection on how those goals might be met.
