The MA Social Work programme blends academic study with practical experience in a social work or social care setting. The structure of the programme is as follows:
Year one:
- Skills for Social Work Practice
- Equality, Diversity and Inclusion
- Contexts for Social Work Practice
- Theories and Interventions
- Professional Capabilities in Practice 1 (70-day practice placement)
Year two:
- Decision-making in Social Work
- Social Work Law and Policy for Practice
- Understanding Research in Practice
- Professional Capabilities in Practice 2 (100-day practice placement)
What will I be doing?
Teaching: The course employs an action learning approach that emphasises group work and individual responsibility for research and collaboration. This method fosters a dynamic and interactive learning environment.
Assessment: You will be assessed through a variety of methods, including:

What about after uni?
This course provides a professional social work qualification, enabling you to work in any area of social work practice, including statutory, voluntary, and private sectors. After qualifying, you can pursue post-qualifying training in areas such as mental health or child protection. With a social work qualification, there is no typical career trajectory, allowing you the freedom to forge your own path in line with your personal motivations.
You may also opt for further study and research, such as the Professional Doctorate (Health and Social Care/Advanced Practitioner/Social Work).
