Course summary
Awaken your creativity with Film and Media Studies at Keele. This intriguing combination explores how visual storytelling creates meaning, impacts audiences and shapes our understanding of the world. By exploring a range of visual media, film, audio, and digital format, crafting engaging narratives, mastering film analysis techniques, and gaining hands-on filmmaking experience, you will graduate with the required skills to thrive in diverse creative practice fields.
Our Film and Media Studies programme examines a comprehensive analysis of film as both an art form and an industry. You'll dive deep into how meaning is brought to life-exploring everything from social media and film to television, news, and popular music. You'll also uncover the inner workings of the film and media industries and see what goes on behind the scenes.
Creatively you will develop your understanding of yourself as a reflective, critical, and responsible practitioner and producer. You will learn how to create original and engaging outputs that express and communicate the ideas and stories that matter to you.
Professionally you will develop a wide range of workplace ready skills and experience that are highly desirable in the creative and cultural industries and beyond. You will learn how to use visual media, film, audio, and digital formats and graduate with a portfolio of outputs created using industry standard equipment and software.
Combining theory, practice and professional development, core modules will introduce you to topics including: the practical skills of filmmaking, becoming a cultural citizen who is able to contribute to a digital media landscape in ways that make a positive impact on individuals and communities, and visual representation - where you will learn how meaning is constructed, communicated, and interpreted in visual media texts. You will also identify the key movements and figures in international filmmaking, examining the role of film festivals, exhibition and streaming services in promoting contemporary cinemas.
Throughout the programme - and especially in your final-year project - you will have the opportunity to tailor your studies to your career aspirations and interests. You can choose from a wide range of creative, professional and analytical optional modules, such as writing scripts, documentary filmmaking, exploring memes, trends, and vibes or working with employer-clients on a series of real-life projects.
In your final year, you will have opportunities to undertake a variety of assessments including projects in film studies, media, screenwriting and/or a media dissertation. Your final year project gives you the chance to explore in depth a subject of your choosing, specialising in interests built up over previous years of study.
