Study social, political, and literary cultures across historical periods from the Ancient World to today.

Course overview

This three-year joint honours degree focuses on developing your skills and abilities to critically analyse both historical topics and works of literature.

You'll graduate as a confident and independent learner, with a solid grounding in two fascinating subjects, ready for your future career.

You'll study a range of topics across both subject areas, including revolution, slavery, post-war societies, and radicalism across a variety of periods, literary texts, geographies and cultures.

You’ll study in a research-led environment, alongside scholars at the forefront of their fields.

Teaching methods

You can expect to spend around 10 hours per week attending lectures, seminars, workshops and film screenings.

You also spend around 25 hours per week on:

  • class preparation
  • reading
  • writing
  • other kinds of independent research recommended by your tutor

Employability

All Stage 2 students take part in the English Employability Challenge, an event run in collaboration with School alumni and the Newcastle University Careers Service. This event gives you the opportunity to take on real-life business situations with a brief set by an employer.

You have the option to gain work experience in the cultural industries in Stage 3. These experiences will develop your communication and management skills, as well as your ability to work in a team.
