Overview

Diabetes is a long-term condition affecting over 460 million adults worldwide, and its prevalence is predicted to increase to 700 million in 2045 posing further health and economic challenges globally. The overall aim of the Clinical Care and Management in Diabetes programme is to equip health professionals, with advanced applied skills in formulating diabetes care to improve patient outcomes. The programme is delivered via an interactive online learning process that will enable students to acquire advanced practice skills in the assessment and management of diabetes. The emphasis throughout the programme is on learning as a means to improve care outcomes for people living with diabetes and in the prevention and management of diabetes complications. The specific aims of the programme are: The programme is suitable for health professionals from a variety of disciplines particularly those in primary care settings (GPs, practice nurses, pharmacists, dietitians and podiatrists) or those working in specialist or intermediate diabetes settings.

Course detail

This online programme is suitable for health professionals with a responsibility for the management of diabetes. The programme is delivered at MSc level and will provide students with an advanced applied knowledge of diabetes assessment, interventions and care organisation relevant to both specialist and primary health care settings. On completion of the programme students will have demonstrated a critical understanding of applied diabetes management processes including: identifying individualised care management plans for people with diabetes analysing and optimising diabetes care delivery systems and how to manage common psychological problems.The programme also offers nested awards, alongside the full MSc:PG Certificate in Diabetes: Clinical Care and Management - 60 credits (1 year)PG Diploma in Diabetes: Clinical Care and Management - 120 credits (2 years)Masters of Science in Diabetes: Clinical Care and Management - 180 credits (3 years). These are available as exit points if you are unable to complete the full three-year programme.

Teaching and assessment

Distance learning delivery allows students to pursue their studies flexibly while still being able to benefit from the full university experience with facilitated interactions with other students and members of the teaching team. Students will be guided in their learning by a team of clinical academic researchers specialising in diabetes. The team with contributions from specialists from a variety of disciplines (diabetes nursing, diabetologists, dietitians, podiatry, general practice and pharmacy) will interact with students to enrich their learning experiences.

Career prospects

This programme is a multidisciplinary programme for all health professionals who want to develop an applied skills in diabetes care. It will appeal to professionals who wish to specialise in diabetes care either in primary, intermediate or secondary care settings. Previous graduates have gone on to become practice nurses, GPs, pharmacists, dieticians and podiatrists with a special interest in diabetes. Other graduates have gone to become diabetes specialist nurses and dieticians. The programme will provide a comprehensive training in diabetes care, which will improve patient care and outcomes.
