What happens on the course?
The emphasis throughout our BSc (Hons) Biological Sciences course will be on the applied nature of the study of biology in terms of how fundamental knowledge learned in lectures and tutorials can be applied with the acquisition of practical and technical skills in laboratory classes. The intention of this approach will be to prepare you for your chosen career in any of the varied career options made available by a degree in Biological Sciences.
To achieve this, the award is structured so that you will learn the fundamentals of cell biology, genetics, biochemistry, and microbiology as core topics in the first year with opportunities to choose module topics to suit your interests and potential career.
The second year provides advanced core knowledge of molecular, cellular, and organismal biosciences with further options from a diverse range of topics including human anatomy and physiology, animal behaviour, ecology & conservation, and evolution & development, allowing you to develop areas of interest and choose what you want to focus on. You may also decide to take an optional work placement year on our sandwich route.
Selection for this course is competitive and provides an excellent opportunity for you to gain both valuable laboratory experience and advanced scientific knowledge. In your final year, BSc (Hons) Biological Science students will undertake a research project and also study the advanced disciplines of modern biology.
