Course summary
Linguistics is devoted to the scientific study of natural language and concerned with how languages evolve, are structured and what they have in common. It also examines how languages are acquired and used. Our department is home to a wealth of research expertise and that expertise is transferred directly into the classroom. You could be learning from academics who are actively involved in having a real-world impact, from forensic linguistics, to accent mapping, to the language used to describe endometriosis pain. With this expertise here for you to draw on, your learning is not only relevant, but it's also cutting edge, and our strong local, national and global links will help you to enhance your study and future employment opportunities. After your second year you can choose to progress to your final year or take an optional year-out undertaking a placement or studying abroad. Both are great options to get more experience. Well help you arrange everything and give you all the support youll need. In this degree you will also take a number of units relating to your chosen modern language. Adding a modern language to your degree means you can develop as a more effective communicator, acquire linguistic skills and develop a wider cultural awareness. You can choose from French, Spanish, Modern Standard Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, and Japanese.
Career prospects
A language and linguistics focused degree allows you to learn many transferable skills that can be used in a multitude of jobs. Teaching, translation and interpreting are popular pathways, but languages graduates are also sought after in many different industries, with recent graduates being offered positions in a variety of different sectors both in the UK and abroad.
As a graduate in the digital era, linguistics expertise has become of even greater importance. Your linguistics knowledge will present opportunities to enter a broad range of employment. Graduates could opt for the popular routes of publishing, public relations, and marketing. Alternatively, linguistics graduates could use their skills and experience in fields such as education, telecommunications, or global consultancy.
Adding a second language, whatever you choose it to be, makes you stand out in applications. The economic, business and diplomatic opportunities provided by the languages we offer will give you a competitive edge in the jobs market.
There is also the opportunity to engage in further study and professional training, for example some of our graduates go on to study on our MA Applied Linguistics, which has two specialisms, one in English language and one in TESOL.
